Indonesian Antique for Arts and Crafts (Papua)

                     

Papua or Irian Jaya has a unique handicrafts and a lot of the work of these tribes are not yet known.

Papua is Indonesian province located in the middle of the island’s eastern, Papua or the West New Guinea (Irian Jaya). Eastern parts of New Guinea or East New Guinea. This region is known as the province of West Irian from 1969 to 1973. The name was  changed to Irian Jaya by Soeharto (Second President of Republic Indonesia)  inaugurated at the Freeport copper and gold mine, the name still used officially until 2002.

In 2004, accompanied by a variety of protests, papua divided into two provinces by the government of Indonesia: The eastern part remained on the name of Papua, while the western portion became the province of West Irian Jaya (West Papua A year later). This became the eastern part of Papua province at this time. Papua word itself comes from the Malay language which means curly hair, part of the picture that spurred on the physical appearance of the native tribes.

Honai is typical papua’s home. It’s  made of wood with a conical roof made of straw or reeds and has a small door and no windows. Actually, the structure was built narrow or small, windowless intended to withstand the cold mountains of Papua.

Indonesian Textile (Sumba)

Sumba has a unique woven fabrics, ranging from material preparation process, Sumba cloth using natural materials for dyeing fabrics using a variety of leaves and roots, because the natural color woven Sumba is the longer the better, it  does not fade. Sumba woven fabric is inherited from the drop-down ancestors.

Sumba has a woven fabric is quite an important role in the culture of indigenous people of Sumba. In addition as everyday clothing, woven fabric is also used in party  / ceremonies, as dowry, and woven fabrics are also used when there is a funerals. When someone dies, especially if he is a king or his descendants, when buried, his body should be bandaged / wrapped in a woven fabric can be tens or even hundreds  in a crouching position, then his body was buried. In addition , woven Sumba is also used for  exchange and payment of fines.

Sumba woven fabric is divided into two types, “Hinggi and Lau.” Woven Sumba Hinggi type commonly worn by men in every traditional ceremony. “Hinggi” for adult males measuring about 2 feet and serves as a scarf or cloth wrapped around his waist. The fabric is the dominant color is red brown and blue. The nobles wear more red brown, while the blue worn by the more ordinary people.

The second type of woven fabric Sumba, “Lau”, worn as a sarong by women with embroidery. In the central part  given fauna motifs such as birds, shrimp, and others. Similar to woven cloth type Hinggi , woven Sumba type Lau also dominated by red-brown color, although there are also other colors blend.

Indonesian Antique Relief (Gajah Mada relief forces)

Gajah Mada stands among the greatest of Indonesia’s heroes.
